Green tea with apple and rose

Apple Rose Green Tea is our own recipe: green tea leaves, dried apple pieces, rose petals and a few herbs from Nepal. It brews a pale gold cup that is light and a little fruity, with the rose coming through as scent more than taste and the green tea giving it body.

Because it has a green tea base it contains some caffeine, roughly a third of a cup of coffee, so it suits the morning and afternoon. Brew one to two teaspoons in hot water, well off the boil, for four to six minutes. Boiling water makes green tea bitter.

It needs nothing added. Cold, it makes a delicate iced tea: brew it at double strength, cool it quickly and serve over ice with a thin slice of apple.

Does Apple Rose Green Tea contain caffeine?

Yes, a little. It has a green tea base, so a cup contains roughly 20 to 45mg of caffeine, about a third of a coffee. It is a morning or afternoon tea rather than a bedtime one.

How do I brew it without bitterness?

Use water well off the boil, around 80°C, and steep for four to six minutes. Boiling water scalds green tea and makes it bitter. Let the kettle stand for a couple of minutes before pouring.

What does it taste like?

Light and gently fruity. The apple gives it a soft sweetness, the rose comes through mainly as aroma, and the green tea underneath keeps it fresh rather than sugary.
