About Chamomile Tea

Whole chamomile flowers, not teabag dust

Our chamomile is whole dried flower heads of German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) from Nepal. That matters: whole flowers brew a clear, golden cup that tastes of apple skin and honey, while the powdered chamomile in most teabags tastes of hay.

It is naturally caffeine-free and it is the tea most of our customers drink last thing at night. Use one to two teaspoons per cup, water just off the boil rather than a rolling boil, and steep for three to five minutes with the cup covered so the aroma stays in the tea.

Do not steep it longer hoping for a stronger cup; past about six minutes chamomile turns bitter. Use more flowers instead. It takes honey and a slice of lemon well, and it blends with spearmint, lavender or rose buds.

Does chamomile tea have caffeine?

No. Chamomile is a flower, not a tea leaf, so it has no caffeine at all. Ours is chamomile flowers only, with no green tea base and no flavouring.

How long should I steep chamomile tea?

Three to five minutes in water just off the boil, with the cup covered. Longer makes it bitter rather than stronger. If you want a stronger cup, use more flowers.

What does chamomile tea taste like?

Good chamomile tastes of apple skin, dried hay and a little honey, with a clean golden colour and no bitterness. The apple note is where the name comes from: the Greek word means "earth apple".

What size pack is it?

Chamomile Tea comes in a 40g pouch or a 35g box. Chamomile flowers are light, so a pouch goes a long way; at about two grams a cup the pouch makes around 20 cups.
