About Lavender

Culinary-grade dried lavender buds

Dried lavender buds for brewing

Lavender buds make a clean, floral, caffeine-free infusion, and a little goes a long way. Ours are whole dried buds from Nepal. Brewed alone they give a pale cup with the unmistakable lavender scent and a slightly green, almost minty taste.

Use one teaspoon per cup at about 90°C and steep for four minutes. More than that and it can taste soapy, which is the mistake most people make with lavender. Honey suits it.

Lavender is best known as a partner for chamomile before bed, and that is how most of our customers use it. It also works in small amounts with rose buds or green tea, and a pinch in a jug of lemonade is very good in summer.

Questions about Lavender

Brewing, caffeine, taste and pack size. For more, read the brewing guide or ask Petal, our tea guide, in the corner of the page.

Is lavender tea caffeine-free?

Yes. Lavender is a flower with no caffeine, so it is an evening tea.

How much lavender should I use?

Less than you think: one teaspoon per cup at about 90°C for four minutes. Too much or too long and it tastes soapy.

What does lavender tea taste like?

Floral and clean, with a slightly green, cooling taste behind the scent. It is not sweet, so add a little honey if you prefer.

What does lavender blend with?

Chamomile, above all: the classic bedtime pairing. It also works in small amounts with rose buds, green tea or butterfly pea, which is what our Blue Calm Tea does.
